About Barbara Kowalewski

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Barbara Kowalewski was born in Brussels Belgium to a Polish father and Belgium mother; her family immigrated to Canada shortly afterward.  As both parents painted and carved wood as a leisure activity, it is not surprising that Barbara demonstrated an early interest in drawing pictures and carving bark with a penknife.

Barbara's first art teacher was her mother who not just guidied her in basic technique, but also provided her a well rounded education in art history and appreciation.

From 1970 to 1974 she attended the Alberta College of Art and Design where she graduated with a four year diploma in Applied Arts, majoring in painting and printmaking.

After a thirty year hiatus raising a family she reclaimed her identity as an artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Wildly experimenting with color and texture has led me to choose India inks as   my medium.  I love their transparency and brilliantly saturated pigments.  The   inks set, don't tend to re-wet, resist blending and muddying; the colors remain   bright and distinct.

I have used inks on an amazing variety of surfaces and lately on heavily textured substrates.  Manipulating tissue paper on board or canvas allows me to create organic impressions suggestive of landscapes.  These are finished with India inks to give color, depth, to impart mood and tension to the viewer.

These are visions of the imagination – dreamscapes – which grow and develop throughout the process with often surprising and unexpected results.  The excitement stays fresh, always.

A word about framing: The price of each piece includes the frame. Given that the art is quite fragile, they are not available unframed as it is the frame which provides some protection from damage to the finished surface.
